  1. For steam cars and electric cars they are automatically in the right gear and all much earlier than 1939.

  2. ​ @tonys1636 the RAC horsepower rating only estimated it based on total piston bore area and not the stroke. The RAC rating being used for taxation purposes in the UK led to lots of long stroke engines being developed in the UK. A longer stroke have tax free capacity.
