Australian made Austin 1800 ute making a river crossing: https://youtu.be/VrxQlkj_YTQ Based on a UK design from 1965 with a 1800cc transverse front engine front wheel drive sedan car. As well as the sedan the local Australian factory made a ute model at little extra cost. Did not sell that well so a rare car even in Australia.

1963 Australian assembled Standard Vanguard ute six cylinder : https://youtu.be/XqepuV74pkk A rare car now. Vanguard sold better in Australia than the UK but not enough to keep in production. Impressed more people when they got a new body and upgrades including price and sold as a Triumph 2000. No utes with that sports image.

1948 Ford Australia ute , and references to earlier ones : https://youtu.be/O-G-c20TUYs Before the Holden and all working vehicles so few survivor cars.

Virtually every car assembled in Australia pre 1940 had a ute version in Australia with Australian automotive engineers producing the extra body panels in the assembly plants to satisfy demand for a ute version. Usually a tax saving to sell a ute Within a month of that 33 Ford, which was after the model A, the locally assembled Chevrolet here had a ute version for sale. Pontiac, Dodge, Plymouth, Austin, Morris , British four cylinder Ford's all had local Australian ute version for sale here. All in the thirties before the first 50-2106 Holden ute. Often called an FX ute or a 48-215 ute , but both names not correct for the first Holden ute. Even pre the Ford ute , local body builders offered ute versions of early sedans. Searching Trove for Australian newspaper illustrated utes will show lots of the early ones like a 1930 Austin 7 ute made by local car body builders. Pre the Ford claim to be first. Will provide some links to YouTube of pre Holden utes.

Japan also had sedan based utes that they would call pickups. That was an advantage for Australian sales as a ute. Like this 68 Toyota Crown : https://youtu.be/RTaVptapjU8 Lots of earlier ones too, like the Tiara ute version of the sedan.
