Any source of the "Magnetron" tale? Melbourne had horse trams then cable trams then electric motor trams. An explanation of the cable winding power houses dating from 1885 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43T1p4CswYo&t=133s Lots more about the pre electric trams in the whole thing, Hydraulic systems for lifts etc yes, but the magnetron was a WW2 invention for radar not a ancient transport system.

The 1919 flight time is plain wrong. It was the first risky fight in 1919 raking 28 days as per this film : https://youtu.be/DKxsis9woBs A celebrated event to do that first flight with a huge prize. Took into the thirtues before commercial flights. Near a dozen stops and still took many days and huge expense.

In 19 teens Melbourne the council areas of Camberwell and Box Hill voted to ban Hotels selling alcohol. Since that time just over a hundred years ago there have been numerous votes to overturn the Hotel ban but each one has failed to get a majority vote and there are no hotels serving alcohol in these areas, But adjoining areas do. So a limited prohibition to this day.
2
Also some up market councils around 1920 had hotels banned in their council areas after ratepayers prohibition type votes to have a less alcohol related violence in their area. Still enforced today stopping any new Hotels. Search for Dry Zones Camberwell Box Hill to see articles on how the ratepayers of the area still support this in numerous votes over the last hundred years.

Unfortunately by saying 1920s in the title, so many are jumping to the conclusion that this is 100 years or older. The more reliable dates estimates at 11:19 on the original of 1928 to 1932 are not being noticed or absorbed.

Currently a lot of remote aboriginal communities have decided to ban alcohol due to the serious problems arising.

The open trams with a trailer were cable trams pulled by a moving cable under the road. Youtube search for Cable TRam Melbourne will explain more.

Before the cable trams there were some horse pulled trams. Last one to the Zoo until the stables were burnt down in the twenties Police Strike chaos.

Yes. Fuel and repairs. Four on the plane all were needed to fly, navigate and maintain it. No passenger plane services for many years.

Gday Ian . Another historic Melbourne film for you in 4k : https://youtu.be/TC7D5T_m_-k Filmed in 1964 and 65 and released in 1966 to present Melbourne in a most favourable light to encourage new migrants.

Melbourne cable trams from 1888. Electric trams in outer areas a few years later , starting with along tram road. Horse trams earlier but earlier still in 1854 the start of suburban steam trains.

@amandajb2024 search for Dry zones Camberwell Box Hill For more info on the topic like a Melbourne Age article how the vote are being undermined by the State government over riding the council for restaurants in recent years. One mistake in the article was that the West side of Burke Road was the city of Hawthorn that allowed pubs.

Yes the 1919 flight time is plain wrong. It was the first risky fight in 1919 taking 28 days as per this film : https://youtu.be/DKxsis9woBs The sea time was even longer. Ian assuming the 28 days was a sea time.

A US term for their early trams that used a four wheel trolley running on a pair of overhead wire to pick up electricity. Even when they changed to more reliable electric pick up systems the trolley name stuck,

A few cable trams in the Melbourne scene. The two carriage ones. The steam trams were from Sydney.

Not prohibition but during WW 1 concerns on the damage alcohol was having got prohibition type votes and had pubs close at 6 pm leading to the 6 o'clock swill. Lasted to 1966 in Victoria. Some suburbs council areas voted to ban pubs. Camberwell and Box Hill are two that cone to mind and still have bans. When new votes have been taken residents keep sticking to the bans.

G'day Ian. Booming for those few rich enough to own and use a movie camera. But for the poor and their children things were very grim : https://youtu.be/bAgiSVYOTU0?si=rT8GYFTywyc-jesL A similar story in pockets of most parts of Australia made worse by the 30s depression when still recovering from the 1890s depression and the severe impacts of WW 1.

Just checked and the first passenger flight from Australia ti England was as late as 13 April 1935. This was the first passenger service operated from London to Brisbane by Imperial Airways and Qantas Empire Airways. It initially operated weekly and the trip took 12 and a half days. It would become known as the Kangaroo Route. Anything less than a day is very recent

First passenger flight as late as 1935 taking over 12 days. Earlier were all record seeking crew only.
