NATO was formed to fight the USSR. They won. Russia was restored, but NATO only grew stronger, and more aggressive after years of calm. So Putin steps in, mainly because he probably sees a threat from a NATO that didn't go away after it had achieved it's initial goal. NATO's current mission is now protection of Europe, and Anti-Terror... But who to defend Europe against If the USSR is gone? Russia is an integral part of Europe and usually only act militarily when their existence is threatened, hence their intervention in Syria which stopped NATO in its tracks because ISIL controlled 80% of Syria and growing. Today, it's under 10%. Russia is stronger, and the rest of the world is beginning to see NATO as absolete, which it is. Any such conflict between nuclear states isn't possible because it leads to inevitable nuclear exchange, followed my mutually assured destruction. In short, no one wins.
