Give it a little bit of time. Crimea has been apart of the Ukraine for the longest part, and will remain that way. Russia already declared war on the Ukraine by seizing it, and this is just one way the people will not tolerate being abused in their own country by a foreign invader. If there were Russian Speakers in Ukraine that didn't like the government there, they should have left the country, and moved to Russia, a much larger country. Orchestrating another nation to "liberate" your part of the country is vastly illegal, and will never be seen by the world as legal. This will only leave room for a larger, more punishing conflict. Let's not forget the Soviet Union and the US are at fault for all the problems in the Middle East. Vladimir Putin following in Stalin's Soviet steps will only bring the world down against him, as it did when it needed to stop the Soviets grasp for d's. If the Ukraine was going to join MATO, so what? NATO is not a threat to the Russian Federation. Putin is making a grave mistake and taking his people down a road they freed their country from when Stalin's era ended.

***** 17th Century is a loooong time ago. Crimea remains with the Ukraine. There was no reason for Russia to attempt a land grabbing campaign. He wasn't doing anything with Crimea prior to the invasion anyway. So why now? It's only caused a war.

***** If you think about it, the reason why protests become violent starts with two sides demonstrating right? Then someone raises their voice, the other raises theirs, right? Then it gets so loud no one can hear each other. They get mad, someone throws something, the other throws back, and it escalate's into a full blown fight, disregarding all peace, and order. This is why he said it the way he did. He's responsible for what goes on there, and by no means does he want to end up in a situation that he cannot control, which could cause loss of life.
