Back in the sixties, my father assured me that the media was slanted left, and my uncle told me it was slanted right. So I paid attention for myself, and concluded that the media is primarily existing for its own sake of self-preservation. Is it progressive? Is it conservative? Is it reactionary? @tonyhovater7467 You're taking the word of commies? And how exactly did such alleged communist infiltration during the fifties affect anything except red scare paranoia? As an infiltration tactic, didn't it fail completely? How many Americans were converted to the communist cause as a result? I have too many questions about this entire revisionism to accept anything. The biggest question is why would it mean anything now?

@halo3odst You win. I admit my error in being that historically ignorant. Such still doesn't excuse the slanderous and libelous hysteria of the Red Scare years, where for every genuine spy ten may have been falsely accused. Bob Dylan wrote a funny song in mockery of the paranoia. And I personally have some American propaganda tracts from the fifties decrying communist infiltration of the NAACP and academic universities. I have literature predicting the USSR invading and enslaving the US. The fear mongering prevalent during the years of paranoia never manifested into tangible results other than overfunding the military/industrial complex.

@halo3odst Didn't the Soviet Union collapse and communism suffered a lapse in members during the last century? Who's a communist now besides a billion Chinese and a few Vietnamese and Cubans? It would seem to me that the paranoid witch hunt lynch mobs from the past indignant capitalists are hysterias to be avoided instead of duplicated. It behooves Christian capitalists to some day abandon their quest for the holy grail in their crusades to eliminate all other forms of governance and theologies in favor of only their own.

I have already learned how wrong I was when you pointed it out, and I'm more inclined to care about truth and reality than my own ego. I think my point at this juncture becomes is communist infiltration of capitalist institutions as prevalent as imagined? Truth is, I don't know and maybe no one does. But as a demonstrably failed ideology, how may communism mean any threat to the successes of capitalisms? If I'm anything, I'm against human abuse.

And, I still feel that Senator Joseph McCarthy did more harm than good to the world as a whole. Vilifying a communist nation which had been an ally only ten years earlier. If capitalism is truly superior to communism, its own desirability will cause it to be preferred. If one billion Chinese prefer communism, if half of Koreans desire communism, then why should capitalism force conversion of national choices? If the Orient wants better than communism, let them amend their own ways instead of America forcing them to change.

This conclusion of yours here is historically contradicted by the fall of the Soviet Union. Obviously some form of alternate philosophy persuaded the Russian populace to abandon the national communism they introduced to the world for a different type of American style oligarchy. I'm not supporting communism, but it was obviously better than what they replaced. The histories of Russia and Cuba prove that. Potemkin, Faberge eggs, Batista's secret police.

@halo3odst The topic we've been discussing is communist spying in America. What we didn't discuss is American spying on Russia. Yesterday I heard that spies report Putin being in bad health. How many spies does America have surveilling Russia, or is that information classified?

1. Who blames Republicans for the Kennedy assassination? If it does happen, which I doubt, why does it matter now, three generations later? 2. Watergate was about a rogue president who imagined himself above the law and was properly chastised for his hubris. 3. The Vietnam War, that amazing waste of people, taxes, and time, ended up being opposed by everyone who had a spine, including Robert McNamara. If journalism is indeed a tool of the left, and the left is anti-democracy, why do wars without the benefit of consensus continue? The left have never contested democratic elections. That's a conservative ploy by those in power unwilling to step down or regard the democratic will of the people. If cannabis legalization is a barometer of freedom, America's still enslaved by the powers that be and remain.
