I was taught the same. Explanation sounds suspiciously contrived.

One of the more amusing and revealing incidents in my misspent adolescence was listening to a Baptist pastor patiently explain to his congregation how the Bible passage was to be taken literally: one camel through the eye of one needle. As if he had been there and knew exactly what the words were supposed to mean. It's assumed authority such as that which convinces me that the Biblically confident are filled with deceit instead of holy spirits.

"And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?...Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor; and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me." (Matthew 19:16-21. See also Luke 12:33)

@Dan Beech Flexible interpretations indicate general rules that experts who explain don't know what they're talking about.

@beardedrogue4282 And, of course, would never apply to you? 🙄

@beardedrogue4282 I couldn't afford a family. Had to settle for three cats and one wife.

@ianbanner9292 I wonder just how many details we were taught by teachers who never admitted they couldn't possibly know?

@granthurlburt4062 We know. We also understand how we got miseducated by those others pretending to know.

Jesus talks too much, and doesn't do enough. He had a lot to say. He had a lot of nothing to say.
