  2. If you ever pass through Dubai airport there is a gold shop that will make your eyes water. While I was just looking (with envy) a customer strolled up and bought a small ingot for $2000 or thereabouts (prices were in dirhams) as cool as anything and just put the ingot into a pocket and walked away!

  3. Don't forget art objects, rare wines and whiskeys, paintings, books, antique furniture, vintage cars, coins, stamps, minerals. The main reasons are (1) wealth signalling (2) trying to beat inflation (3) hedging against currency variations, and (4) to feel important and envied. I've probably missed one or two others....
