  1. I learned to use Fortran in 1972 and the punch cards came in boxes of 2000 cards. The assistant prof in the institute asked if we needed more cards and ordered 10 "boxes" from IBM. However, to them, a "box" was a large carton containing 48 small boxes of 2000 cards, so we ended up with a room full of large cardboard cartons with almost a million cards! Twenty years later they were still using cards for notes long after the card punch machine had become obsolete! I still have a stack of them for shopping lists etc.
