@gorgo54 Very interesting indeed. A typical offshore wind turbine is about 3MW, so lets say 300 turbines equals your 1000MW nuke. Using published materials lists and your figures, 300 turbines will need 300,000 tonnes of concrete (400,000 t for the nuke); 100,000 t steel for the turbines, compared to 40,000 t for the nuke, not huge differences. The nuclear plant is centralised and can use the existing grid, the wind turbines and solar need an additional network of power lines and materials. Uranium is plentiful and widespread geographically. Regarding lithium, Bolivia hold 50% of the world's reserves and have promised to "do the same as OPEC did with oil". Hmmm.

@realsstates1180 Yes, that's unfortunately true. It probably works when the evidence is simple enough to understand, but when technical evidence of whatever kind, medical, statistical, firearms, DNA, etc., is brought in, the expert witness is supposed to be indeed expert in their field. Anyway, have a good Christmas!

@JeremyEM1 Soil erosion is a normal process in geology, water shortages are caused by inadequate treatment plants, not a shortage of water itself; droughts are also a normal weather event, floods likewise except when people decide or are forced to live on floodplains, mass extinctions happened many times throughout the earth's geological history before the industrial revolution. The CO2 levels in the atmosphere were 10 to 15 times what they are nowadays for most of the geological record, but they dip to a dangerous low of 180 ppm during the ice ages and at 150 ppm plant life begins to suffocate. A modern return to an ice age would devastate the earth with destruction of agriculture, industry, transport, infrastructure and cause mass migration of people towards the equator accompanied by famine and violence. Give me warming any time, we can deal with that, but not an ice age.

Being a geophysicist, I took my daughter's dog out and brought a compass. Theory debunked on every poo stop!
And I know of lots more of this BS (!) e.g. hydrogeologists using geophysical data incorrectly to give "credibility" to their work.

This show is really infuriating, even if the presenter is beautiful. Bunsen burners were connected to the little pipe on the side of nearly every gas cooker in kitchens of that era, electric cookers were considered somewhat dangerous as it was not easy to control the heat level. Many men had knowledge of gas fitters including my dad and my uncles and it was they who made the connection to the cooker adding a control valve for safety. They had turned the gas off at the meter first. However, when they checked the fitting by holding a lighted match close to it, I did get a bit concerned. Any gas leak would have revealed itself by a small flame and there could be no explosion unless a large amount of the rather smelly gas had escaped, filling the room. There's a lot of misunderstanding about chemicals, gas, explosions, poisons, etc. on the web that are quite incorrect and gullible people who have no scientific background believe them. But like this documentary, scaremongering always gets peoples attention!

@sarah7296 When I was a kid, there was at least one child out of every two classrooms, say 1 in 70 children, who had polio and had to wear a metal brace on their legs whose muscles had been damaged permanently - they had a limp for life. The vaccines came ten years later and now you never see children wearing that horrible contraption as polio has been eradicated almost everywhere. Covid kills/damages about 1 in 50 who catch it, and the effects are random, not just older people. So, if you go trekking in Asia you won't get vaccinated against hepatitis, typhus, cholera, meningitis, polio, tetanus, rabies or diphtheria? Oh, and I forgot about TB.

What about fluorine, chlorine, thallium, radium, sodium, potassium, beryllium, phosphorous, bromine, plutonium cadmium..... ??? mercury metal is NOT dangerous! The vapour if inhaled over a period of many years does build up in the nervous system, but then so do a lot of other thigs as well.

@PabloGonzalez-hv3td It is still the "most likely" scenario as the aircraft was carrying such batteries. Other notions involving the captain, suicide, terrorists, are far less likely and have been investigated. Until the wreck is located, "most likely" never, we will not know. Occam's "razor" (rule) states that the simplest explanation is the most likely, that does not mean "proved", there could be yet another explanation but the one I have given only requires batteries of that kind to be on board, and they were. Every accident is different, perhaps they were already dealing with a fire and were overcome while fully occupied. It is also "possible" that they are all alive on a desert island indulging in satanic orgies and having a great time, "possible" but highly improbable!

@SimonBuchanNz You are referring to the "framing" of the question, I think. From memory, the researchers did consider all sorts of backgrounds, education, nationalities etc. and found that 86% of the respondents made the error. That leaves 14% who were thinking in Bayesian terms.
As with other psychological tests, the subjects were just given the information, nothing more, no questions, no elaboration, and asked simply "which is more likely". Incidentally, even people who have studied basic Bayesian techniques (e.g. health screening) can make this common mistake.
The group who come out best are meteorologists! It might be one of those experiments worth repeating to see if the numbers have remained the same.

Once upon a time the scientific consensus was that there were no Ice Ages (but Louis Agassiz was eventually vindicated), there was no continental drift (but Alfred Wegener was eventually vindicated) and that the earth was only 100 million years old from Kelvin's heat loss calculations (Arthur Holmes showed that radiogenic heating made the earth much older). The climate has always been changing as shown by the geological record and we are in an inter-glacial period within a longer series of cyclical ice ages, to which we are destined to return "soon" (10s, 100s, or 1000s of years, who knows?). As with all science, look at the evidence critically, be sceptical of predictions, especially from computer models, and keep an open mind, unlike politicians, celebrities and religious leaders!

They wear them at Halloween no problem! When I was a kid, there were some children who got polio (a virus, also inhaled) and had leg deformities for life - a very big social development consequence for them. Vaccinations in the 60s eradicated polio in Europe, it's still in parts of Africa, unfortunately. TB was another less infectious but more serious epidemic, spread by spitting, which is why it was considered disgusting. We have to use all the defences we have, masks, hygiene, distance, vaccinations and isolation when you have symptoms or a positive antigen test - you can be infectious and asymptomatic. Here's an interesting example : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Mallon

Lots of things are toxic, but you are unlikely ever to be poisoned by them. Methane gas, shoe polish, petrol, bleach, lead, thallium, botulinum, certain mushrooms, etc., etc., the list is endless!

Lots of things are toxic, e.g. petrol, bleach, battery acid, methanol, turpentine, propane, butane, carbon monoxide, sleeping drugs, table salt, carbon tetrachloride, many plants (manioc) and some creatures (fugu fish) and even water. Almost all chemicals based on heavy metals are toxic. Mercury and lead in metallic form are almost harmless, unless you chew bullets or spill mercury in a place you will be occupying for years. That is why hygiene, and not putting all sorts of things in your mouth, is important.

It can't be. Metals don't grow on trees in organic farms, they require lots of energy to mine, extract and process the metals for our electricity, industry, food production, tractors, trains, TV sets, computers, hospitals, bicycles .....

Have you any idea of the total mass of the Earth compared to the total mass of mankind and its activities? Let's take a guess; 6x10^9 people and assume that 10,000 tonnes is associated with each person (buildings, roads, etc.) that's 1x10^7 kg, so a total of 6 x 10^16kg for mankind. The Earth's mass is 6x10^24 kg, so about 100,000,000 times more mass. Furthermore, mankind's activity will be spread around a bit, not concentrated in one place. However, tidal friction by the oceans being dragged into daily tides does have an effect and causes small wobbles which do change the rotation of the Earth in several ways, the main one being the day getting longer, about 2.3 milliseconds per century, so nothing to worry about! Plate tectonics also moves masses around, but on an even longer timescale.

You only have one short life on this planet, so if you want to have a house, a car, a bicycle, a boat, a gun, a telescope, a TV set (or two) a computer, a smartphone, a Rolex, a quad bike, a holiday home,, a camper van, lots of books, DVDs etc., then you might as well try to have as many of them as you can reasonably afford, you can always sell them or give them away when you get bored with them! The problem comes with hoarding them or trying to have the latest version to compete with others.

Every empire, Phoenicians, Romans, Egyptian, Sumerian, Minoan, Mongol, Persian, Ottoman, Third Reich, etc. came to an end. I wonder what the people living in them saw then? The EU might last another 30 years, but somehow I doubt it.

Because they are afraid of "radiation". In fact, they are afraid of so many things it is difficult to keep up with them, e.g. GMOs, microwave masts, fluoride, vaccines, DDT, Roundup, climate change.... They live miserable lives, dreading death from all the hazards that surround them, all the while wanting to return to horse and carts, wooden clogs and an occasional trip to a climate change conference in Rio.
