  1. As many bus stops have an enclosed seating/waiting area, keeps you in shade or out of the rain/cold wind, the approaching bus driver may not see people waiting and drive past. In any case it is good for punctuality if the bus does not stop unless someone is actually getting on or off. A further issue is that a given bus stop may service busses going to different destinations, so people waiting may only be wanting a specific "Routed" bus to stop, so if by schedule time or the bus displayed route number/ text of destination displayed, a waiting person can hail the required bus to stop but not need every bus to actually stop and restart run without an actual need by a passenger. There are many reasons to make hail a bus to actually stop. As far as getting off at a specific stop, it is also more efficient if people on the bus can signal to stop on reaching intended destination stop. Yes a pity for anyone not yet familiar of what stop they need to get off, but hopefully asking the driver or other passengers for assistance usually helps for any "Newby"

  2. Light switches were frequently fitted into the surrounding trim of doorways and so not very wide. For modern homes there are the also available the much larger "paddle " switches that need wider doorway trim or fitting of switch into wall panel area where the larger switch construction is not an issue.
