The coast areas they crashed into are very dry desert, poor land quality for people more adjusted to green moderate climate life, or familiar with the lush tropical places their voyage was aimed at. So basically they found unusable land of no real interest or survivable conditions. New Zealand was populated by ferociously defensive people not at all willing to share with these arriving Dutch. So on the whole Dutch were not really finding usable places to settle and no trade opportunities, given these ships were afterall mainly traders, so ended low on priorities.

  2. The WA sucks, is only in context of how seen by these early traders striking the coast only, no exploration of the entirity. Seen in eyes of traders/merchants, used to green farms moderate climate, or lush tropics with trade goods, WA offered nothing but suffering and hell. Yes to them it SUCKED, no value at all. No knowledge of mineral wealth or great usable south west et rn tip, inland with huge forests, Gold further inland. All that is now known and more, and thus in current context, no it no longer sucks on modern interpretations.
