If US drivers were faced by the narrower roads, and much more constrained parking possibilities. Also if the fuel costs were more like those of other countries, that make US fuel prices now going to US$6 or more per gallon seems super cheap. Not anthing like the past historically extremely low fuel cost. Then fewer large vehicles like seem so common in the US with pickup trucks and oversized vehicles most common, would be the purchased as preferred vehicle. In most of the populated world such vehicles would be impossible to park and drive through, or on anything less than main highways. Roads in towns are just too tight, and/or twisting.
As far as owning multiple vehicles even for several household members, let alone a single owner, is out of the question for most just on space basis. Lot more shared use within a family or household.
In especially tight countries, many places you need proof of having a parking place and apply for a permit BEFORE buying a vehicle, and if it is larger than sub-compact you pay hugely higher annual fee for the vehicle, greater the bigger the vehicle.
Then most countries put strict limits on the size and total length of the vehicle and trailer. Those huge common RV vehicles and trailers all require a TRUCK driver's license, along with conforming with trucking road laws, as to speed restrictions, where allowed to drive. All the trucking related driving time, rest stop, inspection rules for trucks. Consequence of such and the above roads space, parking, fuel costs mean far smaller campers and caravans and self contained RV fit out tends more to converted vans than custom big RV "BUSES".
In many places even parking tiny vehicles becomes difficult in any community areas.

Sadly one aspect of this split schooling system is that children starting in their schooling really have no idea or mostly no real interest about career in the distant future.
So parents really are choosing the direction of their children's future. Quite likely in someway constraining their path. YES, they can change at later times, but if you have missed part progress, you may well be disadvantaged after switching. Say someone changes from STEM to the manual trades direction, or worse the opposite, the poor child now lacks in many ways.
The open ended free education, does open say tertiary (college/university) to some young people just going after multiple courses one after another never really using their education(s) for a real job. Far worse than many academics, that at least become specialised in one major area.
But what is the value of numerous unrelated degrees in Medicine followed by Law followed by Finance, followed by Civil Engineering, followed by Administration, followed by Performing Arts and so on, soon to be mid 40s age, never having held a job in anything they studied. By the way apparently parents are required to support their children from memory beyond 30 yr age if not yet employed, as far as living expenses, even living in own flat for rent and food.
