  1. Trouble is US, Australia too, rail/bus are largely star oriented. Transport is ftom outer to inner areas, more than across city transport, so less oriented to general travel around town, as to get from one part to another part means travel via central point, leading to slow, time consuming travel for anything other than getting to/from central work/shopping activities. Public transport is thus mainly oriented to peak commuter travel times, less to all day general needs. Poor service guaranteed.

  2. Advantage in Holland fot bikes is it is almost entirely FLAT, virtually no hills. In USA many cities are considerably up and town terrain, some are hell for pedal power, less so on new electric assisted ones. Think San Francisco, all up/down. Sadly all US is totally CAR bound, nearly impossible to fix at reasonable cost, until alternative usage grows. Spread over large area due to car convenience makes bikes less usable too.   3. New York, at least central part , probably old cities say Boston and like, are very well setup with public transport additional to cars, though road space very overtaken by cars. These core cities have choices fot getting about without private cars, even awkward for such. Sadly due to cars orientation, these have all spread outwards with extreme car orientation, dependance.
