Sadly there was a period in 1980s, where the Diesel in the HiLux got a bad reputation on reliability. They had a severe seizing of engine situations. Some claimed user fault, others no defined basis. In one case an owner was held at fault as he was 1000km over the recommended 5000 km oil change interval under heavy use, 10000km allowed for light duty. The duty of that HiLux many would have graded light duty as it was driven on highway, both bitumen and dirt road from town in the valley to one of the snow fields for winter skiing. But very little heavy 4WD activity, so hardly hard working, and quite likely better matched to 10000km interval service. Yet at just on 6000km from previous dealer service the engine seized. Quite unacceptable, sadly hard to prove that the dealer actually changed oul, though it was charged for. With several hundred seized engines in one year, Toyota were quite dastardly mean rejecting warrantee as 1000km over worst usage case interval should never be destructive.
My Nissan Patrol, due to long range travel even ended up with 23000km over its 10000km nominal change oil interval, several times in 280000km driving and still going strong when the vehicle was stolen from work carpark.
