The BULL ANT is not only big, but get bitten by one and you will never forget it. My mum sat on a camping chair, and on a bull ant, while we set up for our night camping by the Murray River. Even the scream of pain is burned into memory.
On another travel, camping in the Victorian high country (mountains) my dadcand his friend set up camp either side of a small bush. Having the campers setup and an large tarp over the in-between area, and starting to barbeque dinner, it turned out that a bull ant nest was under that bush, mixed into its root structure. With them angrily swarming over the campers tarp and cooking area we were left few chances to tear down the camp.
Solution use a winch on a third 4WD vehicle, to tear the bush out of the ground. Pour boiling water from a pot that happen to be ready on the propane stove, into the open nest, and empty three cans of insect spray. Then over two hours smash and stomp any remaining bull ants. We camped there for five days after that.
By the way we were visited by six large Huntsman spiders at that camp over our time there. Did great work keeping many insects under control. Also had to remove two snakes that came too close to camp. No not kill, just encourage them to go away. Nice trout in the adjacent river and lots of rabbits to hunt.
