Definitely light coat for new consumer. Sadly, as salt is regarded as unhealthy, many Australian kids have grown up with it. They also spread it relatively thick, so while the vitamins provided are good, the heavy salt dose is not. Much alike to many US people who will eat very hot chilli, that people that are not used to, will feel they are burning out their mouth and throat. All very dependant on how you adapted to it you are. But some Australians also add a "snow storm" of salt onto every meal even before tasting it whether already salty.
Vegemite can trap the unwary. We had Dutch neighbors, and they have a history of sweet pastes, especially chocolate paste. The lady once in shopping, noticed vegemite and in belief it was nice chocolate paste she had craved for, during sometime bought it.
On getting home in great anticipation spread an extra thick layer on a slice of bread. On biting in and the taste hitting home she screamed and ran from her house believing she was poisoned.
Sadly had not even read the label, just saw and believed it was dark chocolate paste.
Personally I rarely eat it, but if I do it is thinly spread only, though a bit more than your test toast. But also I like it thinly on a slice of cheese on bread, like cheddar or basically any of the types commonly added on hamburgers.
