More likely msny isdues, compounding, to the young guy being very " I will do as I please, and you can get stuffed" no community spirit and cooperation. Seems the exterior light is causing major disturbance too. I suspect many things are points of friction, lack of desire to call police might have some basis in the reputation the young guy has with police already. The old guy is totally wrong, but probably driven beyond limit, to seek this form of resolving problems. Everyone has an ultimate limit, eg a beaten wife ultimately kills her husband. Been used as self defence in court.
