Perenti (goanna) is one of an extensive family of monitor lizards, of which is also the Komodo dragon. But our Goannas are a bit smaller, though some do get quite large, 6ft and larger. I have dragged a large goanna over 8ft long off a highway after it was hit by a car. In shape similar to the Komodo Dragon, but nothing more than say 2/3 rd as larger. This injured one was too stunned and bleddong ftom its jaws, to react. It would have been dangerous otherwise to handle, they do have great strength, sharp clams, strong jaws, sharp teeth covered in dangerous bio/bacterial plaque that causes dangerous infection, septic wound. I have handled 3ft goannas, tried catching a 4ft, but it exceeded my strength to hold onto, while avoiding claws and teeth. The tail can also be applied as a painful whip to hit you if you get too close. Best leave them alone.
By the way a Perenti is slimmer and lighter colour as they are mainly a desert goanna, very fast runner too.
