Deep down, nobody wants to admit this, but Germans don't like the French. An example: As the covid was hitting France hard, many French citizens suffered discriminations, vicious maltreatment including verbal and physical assaults in the hands of ordinary German citizens in Germany especially near the border areas (cities, towns . villages, industrial zones...)
As for the French, well, we don't dislike the Germans really. We just still feel an unexplainable awe towards the Germans. A few years ago, I remember a radio presenter call it "une peur ancestrale".
Deep down, I have always suspected the French overdrive to create a "couple" with Germany and make it work almost at all costs and being careful not to rock the boat of the relationship between our 2 countries comes from this "ancestral fear".
