  1. The de-centralization of media is the chief culprit. Until the Internet, every journalist worked for one or maybe two newspapers. No matter your politics, there was probably only one place to work. Only towns with multiple major dailies had any room for ideological spread. So the paper had to accommodate journalists from the whole spectrum, and this moderated their tone. Now everyone can find a niche where nobody disagrees with them.
