  1. Regarding deadlines: Deadlines are the bane of software quality. Every non-trivial program, while it is being written, is being written for the first time. There is no reliable way to tell how long it will take to do something for the first time. Each "estimate" is a wild-arsed guess. Managers and the bean-counters will push for these estimates to be pushed down for reasons having nothing to do with whether the deadline is reasonable. Holding developers to these guesses only serves to stress them, causing them to make more mistakes. If the project is not complete at the deadline, either we let the deadline slip--in which case the deadline may as well have not been made--or we can put the project into production as-is, in which case the deadline has forced us to ship an unsatisfactory product.
