  1. "This adds nothing to our understanding of the code." Sorry, but this is objectively wrong. Comments do greatly help a person unfamiliar with the code to understand it. They help us teach new developers how we go about things. They tell us what the code is supposed to be doing, which is information you won't get, even if you stare at the code for a thousand years. They well us where specific parts of the processing happen. They tell us about the overall organization of the code. They tell us the path of processing. They tell us what events trigger the code to be called. In my own 12 years of software development, I have lost far and away more productivity from needing a comment I don't see than from seeing a comment I don't need.
