In a book about WWII that I read some time ago, it was observed that the Japanese had a fetish for developing incredibly complex battle plans, with apparently no room for adjustment when the battle went pear-shaped. News flash: The first casualty of combat is the plan. They were up against a nation whose military had a capacity for dealing with chaos that is still legendary among both friend and foe in the European theater.
