  1. Maher is a pragmatist who wants Republicans to lose. He's brutally honest about the Left because he believes that the Left's excesses will cause Republicans to be elected, and argues against their insanity to get them to tone it down so that they can keep Republicans out of office. When he isn't working that angle he is a lock-step lefty.
