What's not been said too much is that Desantis only has to do a good job as governor for the rest of his time as Florida governor--his term ends in 2026 and he has to take at least one term off before being re-elected--and in 2028 he will have the front row seat for the Republican nomination. Trump will not run in 2028; if he wins he can't run again, and if he loses he will have no chance of being renominated. This is not the end of Desantis' political career.
