One thing not generally known is that in pre-WWII Germany, the gay population was not a unified group like they are in the US. Gay men were in one of two groups: In one group the ideal relationship consisted of two men about the same age, and there was no effort to act or behave differently from straights (other than in their choice of life partners). The other group idealized relationships between older men and younger men, and were hypermasculine. The two sides did not get along, with the hypermasculine element absolutely detesting the others, whom they saw as "soft". The Sturmabteil (the SA, a.k.a. the Brownshirts) were primarily from the latter group; when their leader was liquidated by the S.S. in the Night of the Long Knives, he was in bed with a young man at the time the S.S. arrested him. The "soft" gay men were sent to the concentration camps, while the hypermasculine gays were more likely to become the guards that abused them there. Also, the book burnings for which the Nazis were famous were to some degree a cover-up of the gay Nazi leaders who had sought conversion therapy.
