If you want to see the multiverse concept handled properly, you have to read the Eternal Champion novels by Michael Moorcock. The separate universes are not (for the most part) slight variations. Most of them are completely different from each other; earth has different continents that are populated by different races of intelligent life, the laws of nature (and magic) are different, and the gods have varying levels of power in each. In others the major differences are of the "What if the South had won the civil war" level of different. Only in the Jerry Cornelius novels are the worlds more or less the same, and those novels are one part social commentary and one part nihilism.
