I would like to point out that at times a US Air Force fighter pilot will ask to speak to his commander about an upcoming mission. They will go somewhere behind closed doors, and after a period of time they will come out in perfect agreement about the mission. Behind the closed doors, the discussion would probably be considered a breach of military discipline. But that never leaves the room.

The real crisis that a thirty-six-year-old Kirk should be facing is the growing question, "Is this it?" With every step up the ladder of success, he finds that the success isn't as fulfilling as he hoped it would be. This mostly strikes people who are at the pinnacle from which there is no further potential to rise.
