  2. We are coming to the day when the Germans may (and should) stop holding themselves guilty of the Holocaust: When the last German who was an adult in WWII has passed from this life. Only those who were adults at that time had any duty to stop the Nazis; those who come after are not guilty.

  3. The reason AC is uncommon in German is two-fold. Most of the time, even during the summer, it isn't hot enough to need it, and second, power is more expensive in Germany. This had a tragic outcome during the summer of 2003, when thousands of elderly people died during the heatwave in Europe.

Some years later (1989) I was walking through a bookstore in Britain (of all places), and I heard a woman speaking Hochdeutsch, and I was completely captivated by the sound and rhythm of the language.
