  1. Most people do not remember that before America's first foray into universal coverage, medical care was far and away less expensive than it is now. Americans are very skittish about universal health coverage because when it was tried in the 60's with the Medicare plan, the costs far exceeded the amounts that were initially promised. Ever since that time, Americans have been divided into the "do it no matter how much it costs" camp, and the "it costs too much, find another way" camp, and our public policy has careened drunkenly between these two positions. We have all of the problems of either approach and none of the benefits.
