  1. lets take a short look at what was Russia's goals compared to Ukraine's goals and how they changed overtime. Russia's goals at first : take over all of Ukraine, restore a Russian puppet regime in Ukraine Ukraine's goal at first : survive 2 years of fighting happen, thousands dead on both sides. Russia's new goals : annex lands from Ukraine Ukraine's new goals : retake lost lands from Russia as well as reclaim Crimea. the hope was that western support, weapons and money would be enough to lead to a Ukrainian total victory, as the war progressed it became clear that was unlikely to happen, now Ukraine is losing ground and losing support for it's total victory plan and Russia is gaining more land by the day/week/month. NATO (mostly the USA) has a choice, escalate the war to bring about total victory for Ukraine or push for a peace deal that is not ideal or to Ukraine's benefit but would end the war, at the moment with Trump but also more western voices lean towards the second option. we can't know for sure what will happen or if Putin even wants to accept this peace plan or if this will be on terms Ukraine can survive with but the alternative is basically ww3 and while that may still be inevitable, attempting towards peace might be the better option.
