I have to disagree stxy, the draft exists in case there ever is a major war and you need the manpower for multiple reasons, mostly for occupation of lands but also to guard the distant corners of the world that are unstable, the USA has made the world a lot less in need of this which is why manpower needs are low as they are but the idea it could never switch back is idealistic. As for Nuclear weapons at some point Nuclear weapons or rather ICBM's won't be the end all be all of warfare, war is always evolving, we used to have knights, longbows and mounted horse archers be the pinacle of warfare then it became dominated by guns, then cannons, then cannons and guns working in the optimal set up, then the machine gun, the nuke and ICBM is just the last in a long line of new technologies to change the battlefield at some point it too will become replaced. and last, the reason why some people want the draft is to teach people certain skills, instill a sense of structure, order and loyalty to people for the state or it's ideals, some with good intentions though many also with bad intentions, the rich and powerfull always dodge the draft because they feel they already are at the top and don't need anything from the government.
