It's not overrated, just misunderstood, freedom is power, two sides of the same coin, freedom is just the word we use for "power to the people" but the people can be a tyrant as much as any King or Queen.
The USA has a lot more power to share with the people they can afford a few rioting extreemists, nations that have many diffrent ethnic and cultural groups around them always become more authoritarian as a result, the USA, Canada, Europe the more diversity and multiculturalism the more authoritarian the regime must become.
The nazi's wanted a multicultral, Pan-germanic state where there are the germans, the germanish and all those below them, now we have the elites, the natives and those below them.
Nothing has realy changed and it will continue for as long as people tolorate it.
People like Merkel will come and go it's the nature of history.

I can explain if you want, I have studied history for a very long time and I understand the mindset of the germans (im dutch btw not german) Germany never had any collonial holdings, the british had their empire, the dutch, the french, the USA, but the germans never had any real colonies.
That's why they wanted lebensraum in ww2 and that's why the need to find ways to unite nations around them into their sphere if influence.
Germany does not have the benefits of the USA, they are surrounded by potential enemies and potential allies all the time, this is the german mindset, you don't know if Poland might side with the commies or the americans, they need to ensure their will, their power is king over their subjects.
If Germany tried to be as liberal and "freedom loving" as the americans they would have been invaded and annexed decades ago.
Germany has a gun culture, Germany needs authoritarianism to enforce it's economic policies on the rest of Europe.
Security breeds freedom and freedom is just power, the USA only liked freedom when they could not enforce their authoritarian rule over it's citizen, after the new deal they became much more authoritarian.
The USA is authoritarian, most of the world is, there are few exceptions and they don't last very long or are contained in small city states.
