as a Dutch person, we know surprisingly little about Indonesia or our own history related to it, all I know is that we did exploit the locals a lot, kept certain technologies away from the general public and mostly ran it on a combination of rubber, sugar, tea and spices plantation. We did not really try to convert the people to christianity though missionair's would try and convert locals of course and we also did not try and impose our language upon the local as a means of cultural colonialism, that being said we of course weren't very nice though not as cruel as some of the British, Belgium or Portuguese colonies were. As for the future of Indonesia, I can only look at the border maps of ethnic groups, religions and languages and ask myself ''how the hell did we manage to rule this place for so long?'' this place is a giant mess and it's also along the sea which makes isolationism for it's distinct cultures on each island even more likely, the fact that Java has such a massive population compared to the others is also very bizzar, you would think it be a little more spread out over all the islands. If I could think of any way of Indonesia to continue existing it would be to have a very federalist view of it's own identity, try and find ways to both supress and assimulate local cultures, languages, religions together, perhaps continue pressing the threat of China or other powers in the region as a means of maintaining their own national identity, though I think it's almost inevitable that major parts of the islands are going to break away at some point, not sure how to respond to those break away, doing nothing might cause a chain reaction, then again supressing those moves for succesion might further devolve the already fragile state. I have no idea, I think it's a miracle it stayed together for as long as it already has, just look at Yugoslavia, it had like 20 times less ethnic people between eachother and enemies to unite against and they still fell apart.

hey I''m from the Netherlands and im just curious how people in Indonesia remember/view the Dutch colonial period and Dutch people in general, we know very little about Indonesia here but I have the feeling you guys might have more negative views about us, I''m just wondering how significant it is to Indonesian culture and people.

Vietnam probably has a better future compared to Combodia, since it's mostly coastline, is allied to the USA and are already competing with China for a lot of export markets, I think it all depends on how well the education system and demografics of Vietnam develop long term to see how they will prosper, perhaps someone should consider a EU like market for South-East asia for them to trade and have more equal competition between eachother, otherwise it might be a race to the bottom on who can lower their price for labour the fastest which would not be good for your economic development is my take at least.

@portfan645 we say ''Handdoek'' for Towel but it's funny to see some words stuck around, don't know much about Indonesia's influence on us but all I know is we have something called ''Spek koek'' which literally translated means ''bacon cookie'' which is like a multi layered cake of slices of soft dough with sugar and cinnimon and it's delicious which as far as I know came from Indonesia. on the subject of food, Indonesian food is quite spicy but very tasty, I believe Rangdang (not sure if that's a real indonsian dish) is very good and now I wish I had some.

@3dcomrade that is very true but look at it from this perspective, China wants to rule the world or at the very least Asia, now there is this concept when a rising power (China) is getting close to extending beyond the dominant power (the USA) that this causes war, Indonesia by picking one side over the other is going to find itself potentially on the losing side which would be bad for them, while if it remained largely neutral and benefited from trade between both it might prosper while the rest of the world burns, likewise though not picking the side of China might also backfire, point being be carefull moving forward because things can backfire regardless on how you pick a side or non at all.

@3dcomrade that's good but it might still fall apart if it's not well balanced between each island, some parts might leave, as things develop economically you could see more or less pushes for independence, idk how best to deal with them but I think a balanced amount of action would be best, the worst case could be some radical, extremist political party or group trying to dominate all the other islands with sheer force that would likely backfire badly is my take.

@3dcomrade modernity brings new problems as well, it's never all sunshine and rainbows but it would be a major improvement and a nice counter to the rise of China.

@Homoerectus1548 very interesting, sounds like Indonesia is more complex than I already thought it was, I do wonder how effective non ethnic founded nation states tend to be, it´s not impossible of course and in the case of indonesia it might tear itself apart in a really bad way but I don't think it's impossible for some regions and islands to become independent or at least demand more autonomy but again I don't know enough of the region to say for sure just my perception compared to other regions with the same situation, former colonies, new reality, ideological/identitty struggle, rarely stays one united nation, we saw one small break away part in East-Temor no? but thanks for sharing that info, it's interesting to learn more about other people and nation states and how they function.
