The marketplace of ideas does not actually exist, there is no debate that comes to the truth of anything, there is only those in power that enforce a narrative by elites and a counter elites with a different narrative. Any extremist ideology is never defeated forever, it's existence is constant and can only be supressed by those in power which they have many times and continue to do so. After ww2 many former fascist nations had fascist parties that existed and were either banned from democracy, locked up in jail or their organisations infiltrated along with a myriad of media and other soft and hard power measures to keep them supressed. Only now has the containment been only loosely allowed simply because the democratic forces can no longer supress them without public backlash.
