There have been a few times, also the soviet battleflag on certain government buildings. When you think about it the soviet flag is like what the confederate flag is to some americans.

@activechaos128 yeah but there are a lot of Russians who miss the soviet times, you should see some of the people in Russian propaganda they are in full warmode for the old ww2 days, it's nuts.

I agree war is horrible but it's also inevitable and frankly Russia is trying to reclaim it's position in the world that it's just never going to get back again, same with the British empire, the French empire, the German Empire or any of the other former great empires in Europe and while most nations understand this reality and try and band together to become something different that could actually become as strong if not stronger as those old empires of old, only Russia wants to reclaim it's former glory of the soviet days, they aren't acting out of fear of NATO expansion, they are acting out of a sense of wanting to bring back the good old days, the days when Russia was seen as a powerfull state, a superpower on the world stage, it's exactly the same mentality the nazi's had in Germany after the defeat of the German empire in ww1 and history shows us this has never worked, you might get something back, you might get away with some minor things but on a grand scale it's only hurting your real chances at a better future. right now things are slowly starting to escalate, if/when Ukraine falls to Russia, what then? we all go back to trading oil and gas? no more sanctions? I don't think so, what's Russia going to do then? well if they can't get any economic growth in trade why not go even further and expand elsewhere? why not Kazakstan? why not Finland? why not Sweden? why not Mongolia? why not the Stan nations? a line has been crossed and nothing can uncross it, the best thing that can happen now is Putin geting a heart attack or be shot and any new leader settles with minor gains and tries to make amends with Ukraine, it's not much, it's not a great victory but also not a defeat and perhaps from there these ideas within Russia can calm down and they might realise that what they are doing now just makes them puppets to China.

About the "but meh NATO expansion" narrative it really pisses me off because Putin was in power already when Poland joined! Did not object to it, same with the baltics, hard border with Russia directly and with Belarus which is Russian puppet, again with Romania, only with Ukraine is this suddenly a huge deal for Putin, the security excuses from Putin makes no sense. What does make sense is Putin does not want Ukraine which has always been a close part of Russian history and culture to become, rich, western and safe, that would make Russia look bad and make people doubt the Russian elites in power, esspecialy Putin.

The far right parties in Europe have either distanced themselves from Putin as damage controle now or gone full Putin shills, they won't be a major force for the next few years most likely. Not many people died by Kremlin misinformation propaganda, most died due to lockdown insanity not based on science and mainstream media misinformation. Also the vaccine narrative has eroded a lot of trust in scientific community which is a much bigger loss of life long term than Covid ever will be.

Because proffesors are such respectable people and not paid propagandists or shills trying to make money? The talking points of meh NATO expansion kind of falls apart when you realise Russia with Putin in power had no issue with Poland, baltics or Romania joining NATO but Ukraine suddenly it's a security concern, no it's not, it's just Russian propaganda and western shills who think it matters should be called out for being stupid in public, I don't care about your degree, if you say stupid things in public people should call you out on it, that's why free speech is so important, otherwise the stupid intelectuals win.

Russia has more manpower and resources to grind down on Ukraine, Ukraine needs constant victories while Russia only needs 1/10 victories to still be winning, now long term all of these losses will hurt Russia but will it be enough for them to give up on trying to take all of Ukraine? Idk It does suck that NATO is not willing to do anything in the conflict, yeah ww3, nukes, I understand the fear but I don't think Russia would use nukes, they have been bluffing a lot for years which tells me they rather not fight NATO.

Perhaps NATO needs more time to come to realise they should act or consider first making Russia bleed via sanctions before doing any sort of defence of Ukraine, then there is the Cremea and eastern parts and Kaliningrad orblast issues combined with Russian gas and oil needs for the west, it's all very complicated and many people in the west would rather give up Ukraine than act in any strong way to Russia, yes sanctions hurt, yes weapons for Ukraine helps but will it be enough? Idk we have to wait and see and that's probably what NATO is thinking too.

Omg can you imagine the government using millions of other people to colonize their native lands against their will? Man imagine that, how horrible, certainly only something that can happen in a totalitarian dictatorship but never in the west, right?

@fritzamparo3209 well the stake is not looking weak, be an active force on the world stage, securing gas pipelines in the region, as well food resources and undermining Russian expansionism as well as defend other nations right to join NATO and become democracies. I don't think there is a risk of a nuclear war, at best tactical nukes on troops could be used by Russia but we don't want to take all of Russia just defend Ukraine, it would be the same as China going to war with NATO to defend North Korea from the US, even though north korea were the ones who invaded first.

@fritzamparo3209 the russians can sell their oil and gas to China but that takes time and since China has other options but Russia does not means they won't be able to charge them full price. I would say Russia invading another nation is perhaps the most clear show of expansionism you could have, not sure what you mean by this, I'm pretty sure Russia does not really care how close NATO is to Russia that's just propaganda nonsense, what they do care about it a former close ''ally'' of Russia being converted to the western side of doing things and showing Russians what their society could look like without Putin, that makes way more sense than the current Russian narrative. the civl conflict is due to Russian annexation and Ukraine not giving up claims to these lands which is their right but if there is a peace treaty in which these lands are legitimized as Russian lands then that would solve that issue and Ukraine could join NATO but again that's not what the conflict is about, even if Russia got 50% of Ukraine that's not a deal they want, they want to crush any sense of Ukraine becoming western, still if the war goes badly or NATO steps up then they might be forced to make a deal. Afghanistan and Iraq were never democracies, never tried on their own to become democracies and were never really part of the western world in any way, Ukraine is closer to Europe, has some history with the rest of the continent and is strongly economically connected to both the west and the rest of the world, this would not be a NATO occupation, it would mostly be a western liberation of Russian aggresion, like in ww2. nukes won't be used, small yield nukes won't destroy the world, humanity is fine, the scale of nuclear war has been reduced by a lot and nobody wants it, again this is fear of nukes is what's part of Russian propaganda tactics the world is fine, don't fall for the Russian bluf and also the early 80s predictions of nuclear fallout or winter have been disproven because the people that promoted it feared nuclear war would happen otherwise and they were somewhat right to think and thus fearmonger about it, not so much now, back then the global warhead count was like 500.000 now it's like 15.000.

@fritzamparo3209 yeah that's not going to happen, nuclear dust can't block the sun, Russia won't use nukes, US won't use nukes, this is not an existential crisis for Russia only for Ukraine that does not have nukes. let me put it to you like this, I would gamble the very small chance of someone using nukes which they won't but still has to be said for the chance of NATO to have something of a backbone because I think not doing anything is actually going to make things worse in the long run because then it normalizes the idea of nations just invading other again to expand lands and influence on a scale not seen since ww2, that's a far bigger danger moving forward than us taking a chance with Putin's bluff.

@fritzamparo3209 yes but that happened after Russia annexed Cremea and started funding seperatists in eastern Ukraine and for what? For the people ousting a corrupt and unpopulair pro russian leader? Russia says it's a western coup but then why was it mostly done by people on the ground and Ukrainian soldiers themselves joining the revolution. From everything I've seen for years is that Russia is much more harsh, authoritarian and hated than NATO and the west is. The world indeed is complicated but a war of aggresion based on false propaganda is pretty simple and straight forward wrong and not to be tolorated, have we nog learned from ww2 how this works?
