When I was 16 years old, I used to try and come up with theories what viruses are and where they came from, I read about certain theories that existed at the same and non of them realy made a lot of sense to me, the lost piece of dna of another organism esspecialy just seemed like lazy science, then I thought back at the orgin point of life and how most theories believed bacteria just came into being but that made no sense because they already were way too complex for early life, then it hit me, viruses are the survivors of the primordial origin point of life, it explains their small sizes, their border position between life and dead, their quick mutation rate and their parasitic survival strategy, instead of evolving to compete with other single cell or multicell organism, they would adapt to take over their hosts and as they evolved they became the viruses we see today but I'm willing to bet in the early stages, you would have seen a great diversity of viruses, what's left today is just what works best.
