Morality is something humans created and developed in response to an advanced society. It is not something humans automatically have especially complex morality. Now account for every person of every IQ. If you obliterate their moral beliefs that their religions provide, how can you instruct their behavior? You can't force them to rationalize in relation to compassion or rationalize towards the same society you wish to have, because not everyone has the same ability to rationalize or empathize. Take away major religions and the result won't be a society governed by pure reason. The result would be condition that is susceptible to the rise of a new religion or ideology. Humans are not self-governing individuals that agree based on pure rationality. In addition, moral systems like religion does more than define how people should treat each other, they also define what type of character is aspirational. That is not a rational matter. Reason alone is insufficient and in many cases reason is the minimum. That is all Peterson is saying. He is not saying religion is necessary for morality. All he is saying is that rationality by itself is not enough. Atheism does not inherently lead to a better society. As Peterson explained, it's the same criticism Nietzsche had.

That show presents many rational choices. Why not eat people? Why not kill everyone that may be a threat. All of these are rational decisions. Morality is something humans created and developed in response to an advanced society. It is not something humans automatically have especially complex morality. Now account for every person of every IQ. If you obliterate their moral beliefs that their religions provide, how can you instruct their behavior? You can't force them to rationalize in relation to compassion or rationalize towards the same society you wish to have, because not everyone has the same ability to rationalize or empathize. Take away major religions and the result won't be a society governed by pure reason. The result would be condition that is susceptible to the rise of a new religion or ideology. Humans are not self-governing individuals that agree based on pure rationality. In addition, moral systems like religion does more than define how people should treat each other, they also define what type of character is aspirational. That is not a rational matter. Reason alone is insufficient and in many cases reason is the minimum. That is all Peterson is saying. He is not saying religion is necessary for morality. All he is saying is that rationality by itself is not enough. Atheism does not inherently lead to a better society.
