  1. Imagine a set of five billiard balls in a row. Imagine a sixth striking one of the end balls head on like a Newton’s cradle. That ball comes to rest while the ball at the opposite end departs at the same velocity. Now the group of balls will have seemed to move one ball’s width TOWARD the initial striking ball’s direction. Provide a steady stream of balls, and the “group” will continue indefinitely. Increase the number of incoming balls at an exponential rate, and the “group” will accelerate. That’s an attractive force. Now, imagine that the incoming ball hits the “group,” but the “group” remains intact. The incoming ball bounces off, and the “group” moves away. That’s a repulsive force.
