I think it's easiest to understand from a rotating perspective, where the water stream is curved by both centrifugal and coriolis forces. Centrifugal force is intuitive enough... it just pushes the stream away from the center of rotation. The coriolis force, however, is what makes the stream lead or trail the spout in the rotating reference frame. Because the coriolis force is proportional to velocity, if the velocity is reversed between the outward and inward facing cases, then the leading/trailing phenomenon must be reversed as well.
