  1. What I wish you covered here was the other sense in which chaotic systems are actually independent of initial conditions. In the lorenz attractor example, the long-term proportion of time that the system spends in any given subset (open set anyway) of states turns out to be totally independent of initial conditions. In the case of the weather, this would correspond to the fact that all those butterflies flapping their wings cannot change the overall frequency of storms.
