The interesting question for me is why only the orange hue gets a new name for its darker variant. I suspect it might be because we actually have 4 kinds of photoreceptors, not 3, and although the sum of the red, green, and blue response curves is pretty similar to the rod response curve, it dips a good bit between the red and green peaks in comparison, so spectral orange light can get the rods responding more than would be predicted from the response of the red, green, and blue cones. This extra dimension of perceivable color, though we have low fidelity in it, might be the reason brown gets its own name. It might also be a notable difference between what our eyes can see in reality and what can be shown on a screen. Does anyone know how big an issue this is?
