Sanctions alone cannot explain why a state big and full of resources as Russia has a GDP like that of Italy, France, Germany, many times smaller. America debt wasn't that high in the 1900 and yet America ruled the world. And it's not debt that makes USA going, it's its economy. What's the point of have 10% debt/GDP if your citizens starve? Well, not that Russia isn't used to make people starve, uh?

USA economy was also more vibrant and basically all of Western Europe and South America were with them. Yes, there were high crimes rates, but economy was still growing, culturally USA was predominant on a large portion of the globe... USSR instead was seen as the enemy and feared and even its allied started getting far in the 70s, like China. Communist was already on its path to the grave and the '80s gave the final push
