Before Austria took it over it was a Episcopal principality tied to Italy until 1500( and that didn't fully "die" until 1815), when Austria grabbed total control, and before that it was a romance region until Germanic barbarians arrived, Duchy of Trento founded, ironically, by Lombards, the only Germanic tribe who integrated, and part of Kingdom of Italy.
Only after Austria uses the control it had to make German speakers relocate in Alto Adige the region suffered the influx of the German world and the words South Tirol and Welsch Tirol begun to appear but even so Trentino stayed romance, tied to his latin name, Tridentum, who is ancient and used since 1600 and before, despite what some propaganda might say
Thus in 1800 Trentino Alto Adige begun to rise against Austria and the Tirol county of Innisbruck, who soughted to eliminate Italian and romance element since 1600
