Yeah, because steam is a monopoly, back then unchallenged and people will forever like steam because it was the first and only for so long. Steam also took away owning your games on PC...

@kodemasterx When your only choice is the service that's not a choice. Yeah would you imagine that the monopoly never had to purchase game exclusivity... That's like saying the government never had to bribe the army... no duh, they control the army... I would like to see if valve would have won if steam and the epic store started in the same year, not 12-13 years apart.

@supimzazz Steam doesn't do anything, because EGS never gained any traction. Steam were allowed to suck for over a decade due to lack of competition. There should be a law where in each field and sub-field there are at least 5-6 competitors and nobody can have more than 40% of the market share.

@Cyanra98 I'm from eastern Europe and steam made me pirate more... and play more on console. Why? Because I like owning my games and I only pay money so that the developers get money if I like the game, not because I own it on steam, since I don't...
3
Well steam has insane brand loyalty and is pretty much a monopoly. It won't move until governments get involved and they won't.
2
@supimzazz Why would they resort to any practices when they are the monopoly... A monopoly resorts to these practices only if its in danger of losing it's stature as one, and steam was never in danger.
2
@ombre1904 Exactly, they all do. Even with GoG that doesn't require you to use their active DRM, you still don't own your account, but at least you don't get restricted access to the installation once you download it. You still own most physical console games, but that will change soon. So soon you won't own your movies/series, music and video games... and if they get their way you won't own your car either. Considering that fewer and fewer people own their homes too... good times...

@Mosz And the result was what exactly?
1
@effect0031 I doubt that Alan wake 2 will make a lot on steam. Most single player AAA games sell on consoles primarily.
1
Yes, steam took away our ownership and established a monopoly.
1
@TheProtagonistGabber I thought I was clear. It took away game ownership on PC and forced a DRM on us. It monopolized PC. It takes 30% cut from each game sold, while not providing much of a service worth 30%. It allowed all sort of "indie games" on it, a.k.a complete trash Downloading a 300mb patch writes on the entirety of the 60-200GB game(this didn't use to be the case btw, so it's getting worse as it's the only DRM to do it). I like how everyone hates on DRM, except for steam the classic original DRM... -_-
1
Well yeah Monopolies are great.
1
@starkiller34 Yeah and I still am not happy that I don't own the games I pay for on PC, soon on console too.
1
@afkalmighty1557 Not owning my games needs fixing.

Elden Ring, Hogwarts Legacy, Legend of Zelda and so many more in the past 2 years have come out that were simply fantastic. It's just that for the first time it's a chinese game and now they are afraid. Because you can bet after black myth wukong that the chinese machine has started and will pump out many more like it.
1
@PugilistCactus You must live under a rock.
1
The one CEO that managed to make a monopoly is the one you support, excellent.. and he took away games from us... F*** DRM...
1
They already stole our ownership of games, what more do you want them to do?
1
@warex4501 You don't own the games you pay for on steam, you buy a license to play them. You don't even own your account, let alone the games.
1
@ombre1904 You don't own any of the games you buy on steam, you are getting a license to play those games. You don't even own your account.

A monopoly does nothing and wins, no way...
1
@Lucius-6 Yeah monopolies win, surprising.
1
@Crippledsteel People were negative about epic store before they ever paid a single dev, got a single exclusive or did anything wrong... How do you win then? People will forever just love steam for no other reason that it was the first and they are used to it, unless valve does something horrible, but they won't, since first they have a good track record and I doubt they will break it and two they don't need to, being a private company rocks.
1
@Crippledsteel Steam wasn't good for the first 9 years it was out... -_- Download speeds have only gotten worse. Cloud save has gotten worse too.
1
@Crippledsteel Exactly, they had no competition for over a decade.
1
@GWT_A Except the iPhone has 15% market share and at it's height had around 40%...
