  2.  @vinceunknown1935  The problem isn't the total population count, but the ratio of young to old people. With low birth rates we get a ton of old people per one young person. Right now there are 2-3x young working people per 1x retired person, in the future it will be 1x young working person per 4-7x retired people. If you think kids are expensive to take care of, imagine taking care of old people, much harder and more expensive, be it directly or indirectly.
