  1. well, you have to realize that in the 50s to 70s the world economy outside of the USA was garbage. Europe was recovering from WW2 and so was Asia until the mid 70s and some even until the 80s, the USA was pretty much untouched by ww2. it's exports were huge, the USA's global market share was huge. Now europe is competing and Asia has the US beat.
