MatzeGamer yes they are. 256 bit gives double the bandwidth over 128 bit, and the gpu needs bandwidth to EFFECTIVELY use Vram. on that 128 bit bus more than 2-2.2GB Vram, depending on the memory clock speeds it will NOT get almost any, literary almost any performance.... even if it's 1080p, 4k or 12k if you wish.... Specs affect other specs. bandwidth = Vram Clock speeds * bus width

  6. futmut1000 ahahhahahhhhahhahahahah you made me laugh... I just imagened a 1960's hollywood dad say that. First of all the r9 280 is just about as strong as a gtx 960(give or take 5% depending on the game) at stock speeds at 1080p, at 1440p the r9 280 usually wins, since the gtx 960 has only 112Gb/s bandwidth due it's norrow 128 bit bus and only 2gb of Vram, no compression can help it with that, it just can't push as many pixels as it needs to. Second of all both gpus overclock amazingly, the gtx 960 can reach 1350-1400MHz on average with the stock bios while the r9 280 can reach 1200Mhz on average with the stock bios, the gtx 960 is 200Mhz higher clock to begin with keep that in mind.

  7. AL SALAZAR the r9 380/285 is a better choice. It has color compression similar to the gtx 900 series to compensate for the narrower bus compared to the r9 280(x) and it has the best tessellation engines that amd can offer, does tessellation even better than the r9 390(x) and as good as the fury(X).

  14. XavierPirelli I want an gtx 960ti, the gtx 960 is just not strong enough for my needs. And if in june-july amd's 150-250$ gpu beats the gtx 960, then I know where my money is going to. And the reason it has only 2GB of Vram, is because of the 128 bit bus, it cannot use more than 2GB of Vram effectively, a.k.a, more than 2GB of Vram will NOT give any performance increase, under any scenario. Also if the gtx 960 had a 256 bit bus then it would like the gtx 970, since it has less L2 cache/ disabled L2 cache memory pools, the whole reason the gtx 970 uses only 3.5GB of Vram to it's full bandwidth and 0.5GB is really slow. The way maxwell work is, that it relys on it's delta color compression and it's L2 large cache pool to utilize high amounts of Vram. If it were their 7xx series gpus or any amd gpu, you'd need 256 bit bus for 2GB of Vram and 512 Bit bus for 4GB of Vram, but the gtx 980 needs only a 256 bit bus for 4GB of Vram, reducing it's power consumption(TDP =/= power consumption, TDP stands for Thermal Design Power, a.k.a how much heat the gpu outputs and how good of a cooler you need to cool the gpu), but the fact remains that with a 256 bit bus, even when 4gb of Vram are utilized properly the bandwidth is still quite low and it can limit the card in some scenarios, well NOT gaming.

XavierPirelli yes, but with GDDR5 memory you are quite limited, so the bus speed is what matters in this case, usually amd and nvidia's Vram Clock speeds are 1500-1700Mhz, so it's quite a constant. Also the gtx 960 can't use more than 2GB of effectively Vram for the same reason the gtx 970 can't use more than 3.5GB of Vram effectively, the reason being it has no L2 cache to back it up, That's how maxwell gpus manage to use more Vram with less bandwidth, by having a large ammount of L2 cache, which the gtx 960 doesn't have and delta color compression.

Tamás Kerecsényi there is nothing wrong about prefering a brand over another and going for a slightly worse pick because of it, as long as you don't bad mouth the competition, just to make your favorite company seem better, also the gtx 960 is not a bad choice, but the r9 285 is a much better choice ATM, especially now that it costs 140-150 Euro.

  20. jake nikolia No problems, but I'd recommend the gtx 970 over the gtx 980, because the price difference is huge, while the performance difference is 10-15%, and yes the gtx 970 can utilize up to 3.5GB of Vram effectively out of 4GB, but it's not worth it, those 500MBs of Vram have yet to hold back the gtx 970 at any resoltuion that is 4k or below in AAA games.

  23. jake nikolia I own a gtx 970 and it performs perfectly fine in all games, I still use my 2x r9 285 in my main rig, but the gtx 970 mini ITX does a wonderful job at running every game I throw at it at 1080p ultra with well above 60fps and skyrim with modes and HD textures is NOT as demanding as you make it out to be. My very old 2010 now worthless hd6790 could run modded skyrim with countless mods at 720p...

  24. jake nikolia the overall difference between a gtx 970 and gtx 980 at any resolution Vram taken into a count is 10-15%, for a 200$ price difference, in general it is not worth it. the gtx 970 overclocks more than the gtx 980 and when both overclocked as much as possible(assuming they are using the same coolers and are equally well binned, the gtx 970 is only 7-10% weaker than the gtx 980 OVERALL everything taken into a count. Now the fact that you have a gtx 980 does NOT mean you are screwed or that you have made a bad choice, in the most demanding of games 10-15% can be the difference between smooth gameplay and a slide show.

Also I know a lot because my father is a hardware engineer, and ever since I was a kid, he made me read and learn books about hardware and then he'd question me what I've learnt and if I had learnt well enough, he would buy a gift, like toy, or a console, or a bunch of games, you know kid stuff.
