In 2002, Beyonce and Destiny’s Child performed on a tiny stage in a field, a 15 minute walk from my house, here in Wales, UK. A friend and her then 11 year old daughter asked me to go with them. It was a Radio 1 show, free to get in, I think…or maybe £2. Can’t remember. We were near the stage. Could hardly hear them singing at all, they were dancing a bit ie walking back and forth and waving their arms sometimes and looking rather embarrassed but to be fair, Beyonce was a very goodlooking young woman. After a few minutes, teenage boys in the crowd got bored and started throwing mud at each other. So most people walked away and we did too. It’s incredible to me that such a huge fuss is made of Beyonce now. By contrast also years ago, saw Tina Turner live. She was then in her 50’s. She looked fantastic, danced with amazing energy and sounded like she does on recordings. ( Definitely wasn’t miming. ) A huge, contrast in talent.
It’s amazing what hype can do. I don’t think that Beyonce could, just turn up at a political rally and sing a few songs. She’d need a lot of help, to make an performance impressive. If anyone goes to a concert or a church etc where singers don’t even need microphones, it’s a surprise when seeing someone like Beyonce, singing into a mic but hardly audible in the third row from the stage. It reminded me of seeing a very famous British actress as Cleopatra in Shakespeare’s ‘ Antony and Cleopatra’. We were in the front row, middle seats. She was completely inaudible. No voice projection at all. Some, stars are incredibly overrated, as are some politicians. 🙂 That someone might vote according to what any celebrity says is mind boggling.
